More ramblings and Hot Butter Granny Square Pattern

So many things running around in my head today. I guess it started last night, I got the stroke of inspiration to write fiction again. Fiction has always been my first love, it’s kind of like lucid dreaming on paper and it helps to work through issues and dilemmas I have throughout the day. I haven’t written anything other than short stories since November of last year, when I embarked on an ill fated Nanowrimo project. It turned out to be complete tripe, barely anything worth saving, really.

So I decided to get back into it, but seriously this time. I am setting up a new blog under my pen name (I will link it in my about page,) researching calls for submissions, and just really going into it full hog. This is on top of my current projects and full time work at the beginning of next month! I know I can do it though, I have done it before, having been a staff writer for a now defunct e-zine, the name of which escapes me at the moment. I used to be able to Google myself and come up with more than my Facebook page, and I will be able to do that again soon.

PopcornOn top of writing, I have been working on this new Granny Square for you to enjoy. It is very textured, and wonderfully simplistic. I love it so much, I decided to share it before I even blocked it. I call it Hot Butter, so named for the band that created that synthetic earworm “Popcorn” which was playing, on repeat, in my head throughout the entire last round.

My patterns are written in US terms, if you need a conversion to UK terminology, you can check out Simply Crochet’s conversion chart. There are a few special stitches in this pattern, but I would say that it is an intermediate skill piece. I do apologize for the lumpy picture, as I said, I haven’t blocked it yet. I’m likely going to block all of my squares en mass when I’m finished all of them.

So without further ado, here’s the pattern!

Round 4: ch 3, fpdc, dc in next 2 sts, fpcd, dc in next 2 sts (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ([dc 2, fpdc] thrice, 2 dc [2 dc, ch2, 2dc] in corner)thrice, 2 dc, fpdc, dc, join with ss in top of ch 3

Round 5: ch 3, fpdc, dc 2, fpdc, dc 4 (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner (dc 4, (fpdc, dc 2) twice, fpdc, dc  4, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in corner) thrice, dc 4, fpdc, dc, join with ss in top of ch 3

Round 6: ch 3, fpdc, ctr L, dc 6, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner (dc 6, ctr R, fpdc, ctr L, dc 6, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in corner) thrice, dc 6, ctr R, join with ss in top of ch 3

Round 7: ch 1, sc in next 12 sts, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in corner, (sc in next 23 sts, [2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc] in corner) thrice, sc in next 10 sts, join with ss in beg ch 1

Round 8: (note: make your ch 1’s loose, as you will be working them in the next row) ch 4 (counts as dc plu ch 1) sk next st, *(**dc in next st, ch 1, sk st**) to corner, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner, re from star to last corner, then from ** to ** until beg ch 4, join with ss in 3rd ch of beg ch 4

Round 9: (note: popcorn st’s are worked into the actual chain, not around) ch 3, *(**popcorn st in ch, dc in dc below**) to corner, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner, repeat from * around to last corner, and then from ** to ** until second last st, popcorn st, ss in top of beg ch 3, fasten off and weave in end.

And there you have it, if you want, you can add a row of sc, hdc, or dc to make up the 12″ size, but mine came out at 12″ with a 6mm hook (size J or 9) and dk or worsted weight yarn.

Happy Hooking, and Blessed Be!
